Virgin 'preferred bidder' for Northern Rock

A consortium led by Richard Branson's Virgin Group is the choice of Northern Rock's management to take over the troubled lender according to the BBC. The tip is awaiting approval from the Treasury before naming Virgin as preferred bidder in a takeover battle a move which could go as soon as tomorrow the broadcaster reported. Then the final decision would be up to shareholders of the bank which range from major financial institutions to small investors who were rewarded with shares when Northern Rock ended its mutual status.
